On April 21, 2024, Team Kapwa participated in a highly anticipated event in Cebu, coinciding with the celebration of the “Kadaugan sa Mactan,” commemorating the historic battle of Mactan between Magellan and Lapu Lapu on April 21, 1521

This was the team’s first race of the year. Despite having a short preparation time due to prior commitments, the team was determined and made it to the finish line without any excuses.

Early in the morning, Melvin, Shirna, and I (Devie) enthusiastically got ready for the race. The air buzzed with excitement and anticipation as we prepared for our individual challenges. Melvin was tasked with a demanding 1.9 km swim in open water, a test of both endurance and concentration. Shirna, our dedicated cyclist, was set for a tough 90 km ride, tackling diverse terrains and keeping a consistent speed. I, on the other hand, was set to run a 21 km half-marathon, ready to overcome both physical and mental obstacles, including the scorching 38-degree Celsius heat.

However, things were not as smooth as sailing. Before we could cross the finish line, each of us faced struggles and had stories to tell. Melvin encountered significant challenges during the final 150 meters of his swim due to unexpectedly strong currents and leg cramps. Despite these obstacles, he managed to pass the chip to Shirna just before the cut-off time.

Shirna then took on the 90 km bike ride, which included crossing the longest bridge in the Philippines, the CCLEX. Her endurance and determination were crucial, especially when faced with the daunting task of climbing the elevated section of CCLEX, which stands 51 meters high. Despite her nervousness, she conquered the climb with a big smile (even happier than at the Dipolog triathlon last year) and passed the chip with only four minutes remaining before the transition closed.

As for me, I was nervously cheering Shirna on, hoping she would pass the chip in time so I could start my run at exactly noon. The 21 km run was the hardest of my life, with high humidity and a scorching temperature of 38 degrees as my main adversaries. I prayed fervently not to cramp up and to make it to the finish line. Miraculously, I completed the race just three minutes before the event closed. It was incredibly rewarding to see family and friends, along with Melvin and Shirna, waiting to celebrate our accomplishment. It was truly a great experience.

We understood the significance of our roles and the teamwork needed to succeed. With our hearts pounding and spirits high, we commenced on our journey, united by our determination to cross the finish line.
